Norm's Cleaning Tips

Sponge mascot Did you know?

Uncarpeted floors require more work and more chemicals than carpets to maintain? There is waxing, stripping, washing etc. Carpet acts as a trap for airborne particles grounded through natural gravity. Although allergen (dust, pollen, mold spores, etc.) may be present in carpet, carpet is not a source of airborne allergen that produces allergic symptoms. Dust mites are usually found in bedding and upholstered furniture.

SPOT REMOVAL

The longer a spill remains on carpet, the harder it will be to remove. Spills should always be addressed immediately. Under no circumstances should your carpet remain wet for more than 24 hours.

Dry Spills:
  • Vacuum to lift and remove residue

Liquid Spills:
  • Blot with absorbent clean cloth
  • Most spills can be removed with a solution of (non-bleach, non-lanolin) dish liquid and warm water.
  • Spray on the spot; allow to sit a few minutes to lift the spill; clean by blotting with warm water, repeat until clean towel shows clean
Pet Urine or Feces:
  • In cases of urine, blot with absorbent clean cloth
  • Treat as liquid spills above directs to remove urine.
  • With solid mistakes lift off fibers gently and wash the area as above.

My carpet smells and I do not know where FiFi made a mistake?

Our technicians can locate where Fifi went by locating the urine salts deposits in the carpet. They can treat the areas to neutralize the salts to remove odor. It is time to call for professional help before it goes down into the subfloor.

The longer urine remains in the carpet the more it soaks down into the pad, down into the subfloor and possibly becoming permanent. In such situations if urine dries into the subfloor, the subfloor will need to be sealed to stop odor from re-occurring, which requires lifting the carpet, replacing the pad and a lot of expense. (this is rare situation but correctable)

How do I clean black streaks above my registers and on my drapes?

Most likely you have experienced soot damage. When your furnace is not working properly it will incompletely burn the oil. The result is soot on your walls near your registers near ceiling etc. Do not attempt to wash it off yourself. Call your insurance company or call us to check it out.
